Handball hits new heights

Cumulative audience reaches 1.2 billion in 2008

The latest men’s tournament took place in January 2008 in Norway. Infront concluded broadcast agreements with more than 70 broadcasters, including a record number of almost 20 radio stations. Overall, the tournament was broadcast in 85 territories – particularly in Europe, the Middle East and Asia - and in addition via news world wide. There were 420 representatives from television and radio present on-site in Norway.

The event was the most extensively covered and viewed tournament in the history of Men’s European Handball Championships: approx. 1,100 programme hours were watched by a cumulative television viewing audience of 1.2 million. This magic figure now stands as the new viewing record for a single EHF EURO event and equals the combined viewing audience from both the men’s and the women’s tournament in 2006.

The event was enhanced by an excellent official tournament website, www.ehf-euro.com, which was jointly provided by the EHF, the Swiss Handball Federation and Infront. The platform offered fans not only extensive information about the event, participating nations and players, but for the first time in history the event also a live online video service for all 47 matches. During the event, 380,000 unique users from 165 countries around the world accessed the site.

A complete online documentation of the men's event, including pictures, videos, key data and statistics, is available as a dedicated online presentation.

Macedonia to host upcoming women's event

The latest women’s championship took place in Sweden in December 2006. The event reached 552 hours of broadcast and a cumulative audience of 461 million, a new record for the women’s event. The EHF and Infront are currently preparing for the Women's European Championship, from 02 – 14 December in Macedonia. The 47 matches will be played in Skopje and Ohrid; the teams of Norway, Russia, France, Germany, Hungary and the host FYR Macedonia are already qualified. The other participating teams will be decided during the play-offs in June 2008. The draw for the final tournament will take place on 20 July 2008 in Ohrid, FYR Macedonia.
